Jeans for Joy: turning a donation drive into a denim movement
A six-month, multi-event fundraising campaign for Single Mothers Safe Haven (SMSH) Trust in Gaborone, which I conceived, designed and am directing from its launch in August through to its close in February, using fashion, creativity and community to raise funds and visibility for the Trust's work.
Campaign promise
"Come as you are. Create something beautiful.
Change a life while you're at it."
The brief
SMSH Trust came to me with a Jeans Day fundraising idea in which participants would wear jeans to work or school and donate a small amount, and while the cause behind it was strong and deserving, the format itself was essentially a quiet collection box that relied on asking people to give out of sympathy.
I saw a much bigger opportunity in it, because cause marketing that is built around celebration consistently draws more people, partners and goodwill than campaigns built around hardship, and so I proposed evolving the idea into Jeans for Joy, a full campaign that uses fashion and creativity to bring people in and allows the Trust's mission to land with pride once they are already part of the experience.
"Come as you are. Create something beautiful. Change a life while you're at it."
Campaign creative
Each event carries its own flyer within a shared visual identity, so that the bold Jeans for Joy wordmark, the denim textures and the navy and gold palette make every piece instantly recognisable as part of the same campaign while still giving each event its own personality.
My role
Jeans for Joy is a concept I developed independently and then brought to SMSH Trust as the organisation best placed to bring it to life, and as Founder and Campaign Director I set the overall direction, design the frameworks the campaign runs on and make the key strategic decisions, while the Trust's staff and volunteers carry out the day-to-day execution within the structures I have put in place and I step in personally for partner meetings, major milestones and every event day.

The strategy
Every proposal, presentation and piece of content in the campaign rests on four pillars, which keep a campaign with several events and many partners coherent and give every volunteer a clear and consistent brief for the conversations they have on the Trust's behalf.
Campaign architecture: the four pillars
Fashion
Denim as a shared language that crosses every line of class, age and personal style.
Community
Teams, schools, corporates and families showing up together in celebration.
Creativity
Upcycling, live design and self-expression placed at the heart of every event.
Advocacy
The Trust's mission shared with pride and dignity at every opportunity.
Track one
Public-facing events
Joyful, commercially attractive moments designed to draw attendees, media and sponsors.
Track two
Intimate, purpose-led gatherings
Smaller rooms where mothers connect, pitch their businesses and build real support networks.
The event season
The campaign unfolds as a sequence of signature events, each designed with its own audience, revenue model and story for sponsors, and bringing the market and the parade together into a single flagship day has concentrated sponsor value, crowd energy and media attention into one powerful moment.

UpcomingPartnerships
The entire event season is being delivered through partnership rather than budget, with every venue, material and prize secured by framing each request around the value the partner gains, which has already brought a growing group of collaborators on board and two organisations committed to partnering again in 2027.

Through the GLIDE lens
Every engagement I take on is shaped by my GLIDE Framework, and Jeans for Joy is no exception, with each part of the framework guiding a different layer of how the campaign has been built.
The GLIDE Framework applied to Jeans for Joy
Growth
Multiple revenue streams on every event day, from tickets and team entries to stalls and sponsorship, in place of a single donation ask.
Leadership
A clear division of responsibility in which I set the direction and make the key decisions while the Trust's team leads execution through defined event teams.
Infrastructure
Agreements, playbooks, volunteer onboarding and a dedicated website built before the first event, so that the campaign can grow without losing quality.
Demand
Celebration-led messaging and dedicated channels that make people want to attend, so that giving becomes a natural part of the experience.
Expansion
A repeatable event model and a 2027 partner pipeline that allow the campaign to grow well beyond its first season.
What this project shows
Strong causes raise the most when people are given a genuine reason to show up, and by pairing a celebration-led brand with real operating infrastructure, Jeans for Joy is enabling a small Trust to run a full season of events that partners, attendees and the wider community are excited to be part of.
